Full carbon oxidation

Lignite and carbonaceous particles are burned away (lignite is most difficult to remove). In the case of inadequate time, heat penetration or insufficiently open structure, black particles (from ball clays, for example) can remain even after 1800F or 980C (bisque temperature). Again, while these might burn readily on their own, when buried in the matrix of a clay body time and oxygen access are needed to fully oxidize them.
